On May 13, Prof. Veiko Lember from TalTech’s Nurkse Department delivered an enlightening lecture titled “The Three Faces of Twin Transition: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” in the framework of the EuroTeQ European Universities alliance, a flagship initiative of the European strategy for universities. This event examined the dual dynamics of digital and green transitions, emphasizing their benefits, challenges, and the crucial role of governance in harmonizing these transitions for a sustainable future.
Key Discussion Points:
- The Good: Digitalization offers immense potential to stabilize the planetary trajectory, facilitating policy change, reducing costs in green-tech production, and promoting efficient energy use.
- The Bad: The surge in data production and energy consumption linked to digital infrastructure poses significant environmental challenges.
- The Ugly: Despite innovative efforts, digital tools have not yet spurred widespread sustainable transformation in key sectors such as transport and energy. Issues like planned obsolescence and unsustainable consumption practices persist.
Prof. Lember underscored the necessity of governance to align digitalization with sustainability, emphasizing inclusive practices, democratic governance, and environmental regulation. Effective governance should coordinate actors, technologies, and institutions, and balance state-led, market-led, and bottom-up approaches.
